Dakar, Senegal

French and Francophone Studies presents a 10-week interdisciplinary 12-unit summer study (9 of the 12 units satisfy the GE requirements)  abroad program in Dakar, Senegal. This is a unique educational opportunity rarely afforded students of American universities to study both Wolof and French in Africa for a semester with Humboldt faculty. The program also serves as an opportunity to experience African heritage and to explore career options in Africa.  Previous French language studies are not required to participate in the program.

Study both Wolof and French and explore non-governmental organizations and internship opportunities, according to their linguistic background. The program focuses on social justice and the environment on a global scale, and provides insight into African studies.

Location

Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal. Located off the Atlantic coast on the Cap-Vert Peninsula, it is the westernmost city of the Old World and in mainland Africa. Its location provides a convenient location for trans-Atlantic and European trade; this fact aided its growth into a major regional port.
