French and Francophone Studies

Program Overview and Highlights

Known around the world for its excellence in teaching and research, our program offers both a Bachelor of Arts degree major and a minor in French and Francophone Studies. The major emphasizes the use of the French language through a curriculum that closely relates the classroom to the Francophone world. In small classes and a personalized setting, you’ll study the language, literature and culture of France and such Francophone countries and regions as Quebec, Belgium, Switzerland, Vietnam, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Congo, Mali and the French-speaking Caribbean. Our professors and visiting scholars come from diverse backgrounds and fields of expertise, so you’ll study among an array of accents, speaking styles and cultural perspectives. Videos, films, and computer software are integral to the program on the HSU campus.

On campus, you’ll take part in cultural immersion activities such as our Club Francophone, workshops and retreats, and social interaction with visiting lecturers. Our experienced and caring professors will help you apply your studies to the career of your choice, and we’ll encourage you to expand your classroom experience by spending a summer or year abroad. We offer a unique opportunity for summer study in Senegal.
